Galerie Les Art’Gentiers — Bordeaux
January 20 – March 11, 2023 — 2pm / 7pm

On the rocks

Stars
hot
cold

departure
frozen

imagine
at the very end
over there
far away
or close
reachable!

far far away
so close so near

passage
the hole
black
white

let us slip through!
waves
infra

beginning or end
the hole
inhales
exhales

black and warm
after
before
vice versa

imagine
at the very end
over there

far far away
so close so near

after
before
vice versa

calmed
breathe!

A hint of red, though

白牡丹といふといへども紅ほのか White peonies,
they say,
yet a faint blush of red
Haiku — Takahama Kyoshi, 1874-1959

Short and concise, a haiku invites reflection, imagination, a transport of the mind… A haiku evokes, suggests, invites contemplation and meditation. Through its simplicity, it awakens our imagination, multiplying it like a guide that is at once learned, secret and delicate…

Fascinated by this haiku written in 1925, we wanted to show how our imagination and sensibility as 21st-century Westerners can be seduced and inspired by that of a nearly century-old Japanese poetry… Visual metaphors that are by no means attempts at translation but rather transgressions, inspirations, breaths.

Gallery owner's statement

When I discovered the work of Nicolas Claris and Romain Claris, I was immediately struck by the poetic power of both practices, the "just" seeing. Both coming from the world of communication, the aesthetic is polished, the contours are sharp, the form refined. Then comes the flaw, the fold, which brings us back to this trivial, almost wild reality.

"Un ciel dans une fleur sauvage" is composed of two series never before shown in a Bordeaux gallery, an exhibition dedicated to the work of the two artists, the selection of which was an obvious choice.

These two series converse in dialogue, "A hint of red, though" and "On The Rocks" (unpublished), synthesise this intrinsic opposition between the two practices, that of photography and video, to become one and thus summon two visions that speak in unison, between clarity and depth, nobility and humility.

In tandem, the beauty frozen by Nicolas Claris's photographic lens comes to life when Romain Claris takes over with his camera.

These two gazes cross, intertwine, mingle and interlock in echo… thus they manage, by a feat of strength, to capture in the immediacy of a fleeting beauty a light, a moment magnified by a dazzling splendour through the prisms of the two accomplices.

"It takes a lot of maritime knowledge to give each boat its most beautiful aspects. It takes a lot of technical knowledge to master the recent art of digital. It takes a lot of humility to serve your subjects, not use them. It takes a lot of energy to take on new challenges every year. It takes a lot of academicism to know how to break codes. It takes a lot of respect to avoid the easy way out. It takes a lot of love to make generous images. It takes a lot of open-mindedness to be a great artist." — Bruno Belmont, Product Development, Groupe Bénéteau

In 2008, Sinar entrusted him with an HY6 for a year of intensive testing under extraordinary conditions. Now addicted to medium format (large sensors), Nicolas Claris became one of Pentax's rare ambassadors from 2012 to 2021.

In 2022, he switched to even more technologically advanced Fujifilm equipment — still medium format, with a 102-megapixel sensor delivering exceptional colour and image quality.

"If a wide angle shot is what we can all do, detail is what is lacking for our image-drowned eye with which we look at the world. Then, only then — the fold of fabric in a sewing machine, the stroke of a brush on a white page, drops of rain on a train window, the hand of a sculptor, a pebble becoming a jewel, the flexible foot of a dancer… all these things filmed by Romain Claris move us because they allow us to see a wider, richer, more complex world than we thought." — Jacques Dubuisson, Screenwriter, Director

Romain Claris has been creating short films since 2000, selected and awarded at over a hundred international film festivals. Graduate of the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français in Paris, 2005.

In 2020, he co-founded the Bordeaux Shorts Biennale. In preparation for 2026: the documentary Les comptes de la lune, an alternative history of the invention of numbers and calculation.
